Can I start PrEP after HIV exposure?

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is designed for individuals who are at ongoing high risk of HIV infection, such as people who engage in high-risk sexual behavior regularly or those who have ongoing exposure to someone with HIV. Therefore, PrEP is used preventively to reduce the risk of infection before exposure occurs.

On the other hand, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is for individuals who think they have recently been exposed to HIV during sex or through sharing needles. PEP involves taking antiretroviral medications after potential exposure to prevent HIV infection. PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure. If prescribed, you will need to take it once or twice daily for 28 days.

Therefore, if you believe you have been recently exposed to HIV, PEP is the appropriate option, not PrEP. PEP provides emergency prevention following exposure and is highly effective at reducing the risk of infection.
