PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) must be initiated within 72 hours following a potential exposure to HIV. The sooner you begin PEP, the more effective it will be, and every hour counts in preventing HIV infection.

Research shows that PEP is less effective or may not work at all if started later than 72 hours after exposure. PEP is a critical measure to prevent HIV infection after high-risk exposures, such as:

  1. Sexual Exposure: For example, unprotected sex or condom failure that leads to exposure to the bodily fluids of an HIV-positive person.

  2. Injection Drug Use: Sharing needles or other injection equipment with someone who has HIV.

  3. Sexual Assault: If you are sexually assaulted and exposed to HIV, PEP should be started as soon as possible.

In China, as awareness of HIV transmission continues to grow, PEP has become a key preventive tool for individuals at high risk, such as men who have sex with men, sex workers, and people who inject drugs. Hospitals and emergency departments are increasingly offering PEP medications and providing immediate assistance to ensure timely initiation of treatment.
