Can I get HIV from injecting drugs?
Yes. Your risk of getting HIV is very high if you use needles or other injection equipment (like cookers, cotton, or water) after someone with HIV has used them.
People who inject drugs, hormones, steroids, or silicone are at risk for getting HIV by sharing needles, syringes, and other injection equipment. The needles and equipment may have someone else’s blood in them, and blood can transmit HIV. Similarly, sharing needles and works increases the risk of contracting hepatitis B and C, as these infections are also transmitted through blood.
Another reason people who inject drugs can get HIV (and other sexually transmitted diseases) is that when people are high, they’re more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior.
Stopping injection and other drug use can greatly reduce your chances of getting HIV. You may need help to stop or reduce your drug use, but many resources are available to support you.
If you continue injecting drugs, you can lower your risk of getting HIV by using only new, sterile needles and works each time you inject. Never share needles or works. For more information on how to lower your risk, check out "How can I prevent getting HIV from drug use?"
