Can I get HIV from using drugs?
When you're drunk or high, you're more likely to make decisions that put you at risk for HIV, such as having unprotected sex.
Drinking alcohol, particularly binge drinking, and using "club drugs" like Ecstasy, ketamine, GHB, and poppers can impair your judgment, lower your inhibitions, and make you more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as unplanned, unprotected sex, or having more sexual partners. You may also have difficulty using condoms properly or might engage in other drug use, including injection drugs or methamphetamine. These behaviors can increase your risk of exposure to HIV. If you already have HIV, they can also increase the risk of spreading HIV to others. Being drunk or high affects your ability to make safe choices.
If you’re going to a party or any other place where you know you’ll be drinking or using drugs, bring a condom with you so you can reduce your risk if you have vaginal or anal sex.
There are therapies, medications, and other methods available to help you stop or reduce drinking or drug use. Talk to a counselor, doctor, or healthcare provider to explore options that might work for you.
